Chinese New Year 2009 - ACMP

The Asian Childrens Mentoring Program put on a fantastic Chinese New Year Celebration this year. One of the girls' very own mentors, Fei, was responsible for all the entertainment. Everyone brought a dish to share and the food was delicious! After dinner, the entertainment was spectacular! Keith had to go out of town, so he wasn't able to go this year. We went with our friends, the Grimms (Alison's family). The girls had a ball! During most of the show, Emma sat in Tim's lap (the loud drums scared her). Several talanted people played asian instruments we've never seen before. One girl demonstrated Chinese writing. There was even a lion (Ray, the girls other mentor) was the lion's head during the lion dance. The girls were fascinated with that, but Emma was a little scared. They put pretend coins in his mouth. Then some girls came out and did some beautiful asian dances... The girls loved that. Then the mentors put on a cute skit. There was a group from the karate studio that came out to do a demonstration and asked if anyone wanted to volunteer to try it. Emma went straight up there. It was really cute. At the end we took a group picture of the children, unfortunately most of the children had left by then since it was a school night. The girls brought home lanterns and Chinese writings from the event as souvineers. Today, the girls mentors came over and spent the afternoon with Ellie and Emma after church. They come about once a month and teach the girls about their culture and heritage and just play with them. What an amazing gift they are to our girls.
