Unfortunately, the trip wasn’t planned. We were on our way to Athens for a party Friday night and got a call that Scott’s dad was in a bad car accident, so we turned around and went back to Duluth and packed our suitcases and asked Brandon’s friend Alex to watch the 3 dogs while we’re gone. Saturday morning we headed to Livingston, AL.
At about 2:00 Friday afternoon, a car was coming fast off the exit and never stopped and ran smack into the side of Papa’s truck. (The family calls Scott’s parents Nana and Papa.) Papa’s dog Max was in the truck with him, Max goes everywhere with Papa. They got Max out of the truck, but they had to cut Papa out.
They took Papa to the hospital in town but it wasn’t equipped for his injuries, so they airlifted him to the Mobile Trauma Center. He had 8 broken ribs, a bruised lung, and some deep gashes and bruises on his arm and a few on his shoulder.
Sunday morning, we took Max to the vet to get checked out before heading to Mobile about 3 hours from Livingston. Max had some blood in one ear and some in his eye. He may have had a concussion. They gave him a shot and some pain medicine. Scott’s son, Brandon came to stay with Max and keep up the farm while we went to Mobile to see Papa. Nana and Scott, and I stayed in a hotel in near the hospital in Mobile so we could visit Papa every day. He was in a lot of pain!
Thankfully Papa is doing incredibly well despite the painful broken ribs and Max seems to be doing better everyday.
We were able to bring Papa home last night and he and Max were so happy to see each other! The PT came to the house this morning and was impressed with Papa’s progress. Papa is 82 years old, but very strong and determined!
We’re heading out today and Scott’s sister and her husband will come in and stay with Nana and Papa until Labor Day.
Papa’s truck after accident!
Max loves to ride on the golfcart!
Livingston is a small town in Alabama near University of West Alabama. Scott and his dad bought 100 acres with a little farmhouse on it about 30 years ago.
They remodeled and asded onto the little farmhouse and made it a 6 bedroom home with a wrap around porch. They later added a big screened in porch with a fireplace and outdoor kitchen!
A few years later they purchased about 600 acres of land about 10 minutes from the other property and built some camp houses. That’s where Scott and I usually stay when we visit if it’s not rented to hunters or fishermen.
Nana and papa moved from Altlanta to Livingston in 1998 and made it their permanent home. They love it out there. It is so peaceful and beautiful!
