Emma's Lava Lamp Science Project for 4H Club...

Fill 1/4 of a container with water, then 3/4 with oil. Drop 10 drops of food coloring into the container and wait for all of the color to make its way through the oil and into the bottom of the container. Gently swirl to mix water and food color in the bottom. Then drop a half of an alka seltzer tablet into the bottle and watch the "lava" bubble up. Drop a whole tablet in and see a tornado effect while the lava bubbles up. We used a water bottle. If you use a coke bottle, you can put up to 6 alka seltzer tablets in. Do not put the cap on the bottle when the alka seltzer is bubbling because there is too much gas build up and it may explode. Wait for it to completely stop, then put the cap on and store the mixture. Anytime you want to activate your lava lamp, just drop in an alka seltzer tablet. For extra fun, turn of the lights and put a flashlight under the lava lamp and drop in the alka seltzer!
